5 Best Piano Lessons in London to Hit the Right Notes

  • Instructor credentials: I checked each teacher’s training and experience. Musical talent matters, but so does explaining tricky techniques without tying my fingers in knots.

  • Scheduling flexibility: I favoured schools with evening or weekend slots. Lessons shouldn’t require a diary concerto.

  • Curriculum adaptability: I looked for tuition suited to hobbyists, exam candidates, and everyone in between. Extra points went to schools teaching styles beyond classical.

  • Studio location: I considered Tube links and overall accessibility. The less time spent commuting, the more time I’ll have to practise.

I fell hard for a baby grand in a local music store, but my fingers weren’t quite ready for the romance. Finding the best piano lessons in London suddenly became my next grand plan.

I wanted a teacher who could fit around London life without turning practice into another chore. The same goes whether you’re relearning old pieces or helping your child discover music.

So, I looked into the city’s standout schools, teaching styles, and tutors. These picks should have me (and you!) tickling the ivories with far more confidence!

Finding a piano teacher across London can feel like composing with a Tube map. London Piano Teachers makes things simpler by matching you with tutors based on your location, experience, goals, and musical tastes.

I like that lessons can take place at home, online, in a teacher’s studio, or even at your workplace.

The roster covers beginners through advanced players, with classical, jazz, and pop or rock among the available styles.

You’ll begin with a paid trial lesson before deciding whether the teacher strikes the right chord.

However, ongoing tuition is generally weekly, and you won’t receive a teacher’s full name or contact details until you’ve registered and are ready to book.

Pros

  • Matches students by location, experience, goals, and musical interests
  • Offers home, online, studio, and workplace lessons
  • Covers classical, jazz, and pop or rock styles
  • Provides a paid trial before regular lessons

Cons

  • Ongoing tuition is generally expected to be weekly

I thoroughly enjoyed my piano lessons with Angus.

I thoroughly enjoyed my piano lessons with Angus. He is a great teacher, always punctual and reliable. Angus’s lessons were well structured, yet tailored to my pace and abilities. I was very pleased at how much and how quickly I have learnt with Angus. I was also grateful for the flexibility which I could have lessons around my work and other personal commitments. I strongly recommend Angus to anyone!

Highly recommend Monica.

Monica has been such an amazing piano teacher for our kids.  She is a gifted pianist who is also a gifted teacher.  She has really connected with my kids.  She has been exactly the kind of piano teacher I’ve wanted for them.  She is also just so very lovely to deal with, and has been very flexible with us when things come up.  Highly recommend Monica.  Wonderful experience!

2. London Piano Institute

Address: 21 Fleet Street

Contact: 020 7127 0717

Hours: Mon–Sat; visits strictly by prior appointment only

London Piano Institute feels refreshingly grown-up, especially if you’d rather practise scales than share a waiting room with restless children.

Its City and Marylebone branches cater exclusively to adult beginners, returning players, and advanced amateurs.

I like that one-to-one tuition is tailored to your pace, interests, and existing ability instead of marching everyone through the same score.

Classical and jazz are covered, but you can loosen your tie with blues, pop, or rock lessons too!

However, this adult-only approach won’t suit families seeking piano lessons for children. One-to-one students must initially commit for three months, while both branches accept visitors by prior appointment rather than casual walk-ins.

Pros

  • Specialises in piano tuition for adults
  • Welcomes beginners, returners, and advanced amateurs
  • Offers personalised one-to-one and group courses
  • Covers classical, jazz, blues, pop, and rock
  • Has branches in the City and Marylebone

Cons

  • Doesn’t offer piano lessons for children
  • One-to-one courses require an initial three-month commitment
  • Visits are strictly by prior appointment

Hoping for many more lessons to come.

I’ve been attending the London Piano Institute for about a year now. Really wish I’d found this organisation years ago, however, I’m at it now and really enjoying piano lessons. Because I do shift work I needed flexibility with lessons and the LPI does this for me for which I’m grateful. My tutor Naomi is very talented. I’m a mature student, but made to feel confidence in my pursuit of mastering the piano. She is a great tutor and knows her stuff! Hoping for many more lessons to come.

Excellent piano lessons provided  by a very passionate and expert piano teacher.

Excellent piano lessons provided  by a very passionate and expert piano teacher. She is thorough and methodical in her approach to teaching, and this is allowing me to make good progress on a weekly basis. I’m always inspired after each lesson to go away and practise what she has taught us in the group.

She is also patient with us, and deals with our queries and challenges in an engaged and helpful way. I’m enjoying the lessons, and I’m very happy to have made the move to learn to play this instrument at this stage in my life!

Address: 40 Kensington Hall Gardens, Beaumont Avenue

Contact: 0207 101 4479 | 0751 427 2027

Hours: Mon-Fri: 9 AM–9 PM; Sat-Sun: 9 AM- 8 PM

WKMT is a tempting choice if you’d like your piano lessons with a little concert-hall polish. It teaches children and adults across three studios in West Kensington, Camberwell, and Bermondsey.

The school’s Scaramuzza-based technique puts careful movement, posture, and expression at the heart of each lesson.

There’s plenty here for beginners too, alongside advanced coaching for exams, performances, and serious classical development.

However, none of its current studios is in North London, which may leave some pupils facing a less-than-musical commute.

Its structured, classically rooted approach may suit goal-driven learners better than anyone after purely casual keyboard sessions.

Pros

  • Teaches both children and adults
  • Welcomes beginners through advanced pianists
  • Uses the Scaramuzza-based piano technique
  • Provides exam and performance preparation
  • Operates three London studios
  • Offers long opening hours throughout the week

Cons

  • Has no studio in North London
  • May be less suited to purely casual keyboard learners

Customer Reviews

I feel very fortunate to have Gisela as my teacher.

I am from China and currently study piano and composition at WKMT. I feel very fortunate to have Gisela as my teacher. Many things I had hoped to learn, but could not find in music school, I have finally learned here. Studying composition with her has made my journey to London feel truly meaningful.

Gisela is not only an excellent teacher, but also an active musician who composes, performs and collaborates with talented artists. She is responsible, open-minded, patient and fun. She listens carefully to every question and idea, and her lessons are always productive but full of laughter.

Would definitely recommend

He’s patient, makes lessons genuinely fun, and weaves in broader musicality. He sings with the children, plays piano with and for them, and has taught them to recognise whether music is in a major or minor key and to identify music from different periods like baroque, romanticism, and beyond. They’re not just learning to play, they’re learning to understand music. Would definitely recommend!

4. London Piano Centre | Piano Lessons London

Address: 6 Baker Street

Contact: +44 7517 449068

Hours: Contact to schedule an appointment

London Piano Centre brings proper concert-hall credentials to Baker Street without reserving the piano bench for prodigies. It teaches children and adults at every level, from first notes to auditions, recitals, and graded exams.

I like that its teachers are active concert pianists and tailor lessons around each student’s repertoire and ambitions.

Founder Gabriele Baldocci leads the faculty, while the school even carries a published recommendation from celebrated pianist Martha Argerich.

Lessons take place on a Blüthner piano, which should give developing fingers something rather lovely to work with.

However, there’s only one physical studio, teaching doesn’t run every week of the year, and students may reschedule just one lesson per academic semester.

Pros

  • Teaches children and adults at every skill level
  • Employs active concert pianists
  • Offers personalised lesson plans
  • Prepares students for exams, auditions, and recitals
  • Provides lessons on a Blüthner piano
  • Offers online tuition

Cons

  • Operates only one physical studio
  • Doesn’t hold lessons every week of the year
  • Allows only one rescheduled lesson per academic semester

Customer Reviews

I am absolutely thrilled with my piano lessons through London Piano Centre

I am absolutely thrilled with my piano lessons through London Piano Centre. My teacher is Giacomo Tora. He is patient, thoughtful, and encouraging. I had not played piano in decades, and require a lot of help to start again. I feel blessed to have such a talented concert pianist looking after my piano progress, such as it is. I also appreciate London Piano Centre’s very efficient booking process.

Can’t recommend him enough.

If you want to make great progress with your piano, this is where to go. Gabriele is my son’s teacher and he is beyond every expectation; kind yet always to the point, he knows how to stretch my son’s ability and make him more confident with every single lesson. He’ll make you a better pianist and an all rounded musician. Plus, he has great human and mentoring skills so he’ll know how to make your performances better,  playing on your strengths. Can’t recommend him enough.

5. West London Piano Teacher

Website

Address: Notting Hill, West London W11

Contact: Enquiry form via website

Hours: Book to schedule an appointment

West London Piano Teacher has the sort of musical range that refuses to keep the piano in a classical box. Gordon Hulbert combines traditional technique with jazz, pop, soul, funk, gospel, and electronic music.

I like that his one-to-one approach covers ear training, improvisation, rhythm, theory, and technical development without treating them as separate worlds.

It could suit adult beginners, experienced players, and anyone keen to understand both the notes and the groove.

However, this is a single-teacher practice rather than a large academy with several tutors to choose from. Its Notting Hill location may be less convenient for learners in East or South London, as well.

Pros

  • Combines classical and contemporary teaching methods
  • Covers jazz, pop, soul, funk, gospel, and electronic music
  • Includes ear training, improvisation, rhythm, and theory
  • Offers personalised one-to-one tuition
  • Welcomes beginners and experienced players

Cons

  • Operates as a single-teacher practice
  • Has only one teaching location in Notting Hill

Customer Reviews

Gordon made it approachable and, most importantly, so much fun!

I took jazz piano lessons with Gordon during my gap year travels after graduating from Harvard. I was only in the U.K. for a few months and had always wanted to try jazz piano after studying classical piano for over a decade. Although jazz felt far outside my comfort zone, Gordon made it approachable and, most importantly, so much fun! He was patient, kind, and endlessly generous with his knowledge, always welcoming questions.

Gordon is a fantastic piano teacher

Gordon is a fantastic piano teacher. I used to play the piano when I was a child but stopped for a few years. I had some previous knowledge about classical piano and wanting to learn more about jazz and improvisation skills. Gordon is extremely supportive, I would equally recommend him for people from any levels.
